Marioff designs, manufactures and installs its innovative HI-FOG® Water Mist Fire Protection System across a wide range of marine and land-based applications. Marioff is the world’s pre-eminent provider of water mist systems for fire protection with over 15 years of experience, over 6,000 fire tests backing HI-FOG® development, about 1,000 marine vessels and structures protected at sea, and about 1,500 installations protected on land. HI-FOG® proves its value in the first seconds and minutes of a tunnel fire. HI-FOG® attacks the fire with high-velocity plumes of water mist which instantly beat the fire down, curtailing the development of its heat intensity and cooling the surroundings very effectively. The amount of smoke given off is greatly reduced. The fire is suppressed and controlled for the emergency services arriving on the scene. The objective is four-fold: save lives; minimize damage to the tunnel infrastructure; ensure traffic continuity; minimize water usage.

Relentless fire testing

With over 6,000 fire tests behind it, HI-FOG® is the world’s most tested and approved water mist system for fire protection. HI-FOG® has been tested thoroughly for tunnel fire protection and its performance in this environment is a known, impressive quantity. Marioff conducted two major tunnel fire test programs in Norway as part of HI-FOG® system development. Tunnel-specific fire test programs have been carried out for the M30 tunnel in Madrid and the A86 West tunnel in Paris.

Marioff milestones in underground fire protection

1992

London Underground orders HI-FOG® to protect a number of self-contained store-rooms.

1994

Madrid Metro begins to install HI-FOG® to protect metro stations and trains. Today, about 200 Madrid metro stations and 1,000 train carriages are protected.

1995

After an extensive program of full-scale fire testing, Marioff is contracted to install HI-FOG® in the A86 West tunnel, part of the A86 super-ring road, in Paris. World’s largest water mist fire protection system: 10 km tunnel in two levels linking Rueil-Malmaison and Versailles.

2006

Marioff selected to install HI-FOG® in five critical tunnel segments of Madrid’s M30 inner-ring motorway. Project completed in 2007. The main command centre, auxiliary command centre and technical rooms related to system control are also HI-FOG®-protected.

2008

Marioff selected to install HI-FOG® in Helsinki’s new tunnel service network, which will allow the city to expand its pedestrian zones by limiting traffic through the downtown core. Two kilometres of the tunnel network will be protected by HI-FOG®. The installation will be Finland’s first automatic tunnel fire protection system.
