Efficient production with specialist expertise and reliability is more increasingly in demand in today's modern tunnelling industry. In view of this development, the Swiss companies Bernold AG and Ceresola Tunnelbautechnik AG made the decision to merge and became Bernold-Ceresola AG, thus creating a centre of competence for steel formwork, concrete segment manufacturing plants, support materials and individual steelwork solutions.

Concrete segment manufacturing plants
Many years of experience with the daily new challenges of worldwide tunnelling projects have transformed Bernold-Ceresola AG into highly qualified specialists in the area of segment manufacturing. They accommodate all specific requirements from fully automated high-technology systems, which are turnkey-delivered, including commissioning and training, down to the simplest solutions. The in-house designed and manufactured steel moulds satisfy the highest demands with respect to tolerance and handling. Whether one pass or secondary lining, whether the production is stationary or with carousel lines, Bernold-Ceresola AG will, together with their customer, develop and implement the most economic concept. If required, this can be commenced in the first planning stages of the project.

Tunnel shutters and individual steel construction
The Bernold-Ceresola concepts for tunnel shutters include: Vault shutters, invert shutters, full shutters, outside/counter shutters, soffit/suspended slab shutters, shutters for niches and cross passages, reinforcement gantries, profiling gantries, and membrane gantries.

Steel arches and lattice girder
The Bernold lattice girder has been tried and tested with great success in numerous tunnelling operations. It can be used to immediately secure the excavation in the face area, or for support purposes. Unlike a full-section beam, the lattice girder is integrated into the static system of the shotcrete shell for the purposes of dimensioning the thickness of reinforced concrete required for final lining. Lattice girders have other advantages in that they are lightweight and easy to install, do not weaken the shotcrete cross-section, and minimize the shadow effect on spraying. They also act as reinforcement, excavation gauge, and spacer, at the same time providing a fastening aid for internal mesh reinforcement.
