It involves a 44.6 km-long 5.2 m-diameter water transfer tunnel. The move ends more than 18 months of deadlock on the project which was originally due to go ahead at the end of 2005. The contract will be awarded by December. Construction work is expected to start at the middle of next year and be completed by the middle of 2013. The project, which is being funded by a MYR2.4 billion untied loan from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC) and the government of Malaysia, involves the construction of a water treatment plant, a pipeline distribution network and the Kelau dam. The loan will be used to finance construction of the tunnel, dam and related works as well as consulting services, including detailed design and construction supervision. 36/07.
