Bonaventura, a consortium of Hochtief, Alpine Mayreder and Egis Projects, has recently been selected as preferred bidder by ASFINAG for a 32-year concession to build and operate one section of the A5 toll road between Vienna and the border with the Czech Republic. The relevant project is called "PPP East region - Package 1" and consists of the A5 South (section Eibesbrunn-Schrick, 24 km), S1 East (Suessenbrunn-Eibesbrunn, 12 km), S1 West (Eibesbrunn-Korneuburg, 12 km) and the 4 km S2 Suessenbrunn bypass. The official award of the contract is scheduled in the end of September 2006 but subject to objections by unsuccessful bidders. All in all, it represents approx. 52 km of new motorways and expressways with estimated construction costs of EUR850 million. The project is the first Austrian concession model for design, construction, financing and operation of primary road infrastructure.The scheme includes the following tunnels: Tradenberg (S1 West), 2,450 m with a 1,400 m bored/mined section and the remainder in cut-and-cover; Stetten (S1 West), 3,030 m; Kreuzenstein (S1 West), 1,760 m; and Eibesbrunn (A5 South), 460 m. Cut-and-cover method to be used for the Stetten, Kreuzenstein and Eibesbrunn tunnels. All tunnels will have two tubes, each for two lanes and hard shoulder (inner width of 10 m). The Eibesbrunn tunnel has three lanes in each tube and a hard shoulder (inner width of 15.5 m). Inner height will always be 4.7 m. Excavation diameter for the Eibesbrunn tunnel will be approx. 130 sq m.Geology is a changing domination of marl/clay and sandstone (Tradenberg tunnel); loose soil, mainly thick layers of gravel on deeper silt layers (Stetten tunnel); loose soil, mainly thick layers of gravel on deeper silt layers (Kreuzenstein tunnel); and loose soil (Eibesbrunn tunnel).The method for support and lining will be the bidders' choice but probably predominantely shotcrete. The Joint venture between Strabag (50%) and Porr (50%) have been awarded the  half a billion euro contract for the first phase of the largest connected construction project of Wiener Linien, the Vienna public transport provider. A total of 7 km of tunnel will be driven and four new stations built as part of the redirection of the U2 line. Construction is set to begin in February 2021 and will run until mid-2028.  

Under the metro expansion, the U2 line between Karlsplatz and Rathaus will become part of the U5, while the U2 will branch down towards the south of the city. The contract is part of the first construction phase of the U2/U5 line expansion in the Austrian capital. This includes the phases U2/17-21 (U2/17 driven by TBM, U2/18 Matzleinsdorferplatz station, U2/19 Reinprechtsdorfer Straße station, U2/20 Pilgramgasse station and U2/21 Neubaugasse station).  

Around 4 km will be driven by a TBM, while another 3 km will be bored using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). All of the works such as tunnelling, structural engineering, ground engineering and railway construction will be rendered autonomously by the consortium.  

The stations are being built using the cut-and-cover method of construction, with the station shafts up to 40 m wide and 50 m long. This means that the excavation for the stations, which lie at a depth of up to 40 m, must first be secured by means of drilled piles and internal steel stiffeners and then worked downwards floor by floor.   Vomp exploration drive will be utilised as the escape route from the main tunnel. A 150 m access drive has been completed towards the centre of the alignment from where contractor Jager is driving east and west in loose material. Geology is terrible in the east drive where umbrella drilling is necessary using an Atlas Copco 352 drillrig and pregrouting is being carried out to stem the water ingress. The east drive had advanced 400 m when a 50 m-high collapse occurred two weeks ago. West drive is in better conditions and has advanced 700 m to date. The bidding consortium H41 Sill Gorge-Pfons comprising the companies Implenia Österreich GmbH, Implenia Schweiz AG, Webuild S.p.A with its Swiss subsidiary, CSC costruzioni SA secured the EUR651 million contract for Lot H41 Gola del Sill-Pfons of the Brenner Base Tunnel project .   

The Lot H41 is a section of the Brenner Base Tunnel in Austria and consists of the construction of the railway from Gola del Sill near the city of Innsbruck in the north to the town of Pfons located further south. The contract includes both the traditional method of excavation for the two parallel tunnels for approximately 7.3 km, including auxiliary tunnels as well as the mechanised method of excavation for another 16.5 km, in addition to the lining of the walls of completed tunnels, an underground emergency stop at Innsbruck, access tunnels, exploratory tunnels and parts of other secondary tunnels.  

The mechanised method will deploy two TBMs (10 m diameter). The design of the project focuses on the environmental sustainability of the project during construction: the logistics of the work sites are designed to reduce travel times for the transport of materials, and measures to reduce dust and noise are foreseen.  

The Brenner Base Tunnel will be crucial for Europe. It will be a key part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) that will connect Helsinki in Finland and La Valletta in Malta. It also plays an important role in connecting Italy and Austria with a high-speed/high-capacity railway.
