Northern end of line 5 being extended under Plaza Baquendano and then turning west following Calles Merced, Monjitas and Cathedral to an intersection with Santa Ana station on line 2 downtown. Two stations on new route, both cut-and-cover with platform and mezzanine levels. Bellas Artes station in cramped situation where vertical piles cannot be installed. Instead, 130 x 1.2 m diameter piles have been installed to depths of 15 - 21 m by foundation specialist Pilotes Terratest. Main contractor Neut Latour excavating 16 m wide x 140 m long x 15 m deep station box in stages to allow for pile anchoring using cables of lengths 13 m to 20 m. Running tunnels are 60m2, 10 m wide x 9 m high in alluvium comprising coarse cobbles, boulders and fines at depths of 12 m to 17 m accessed by 20 m-diameter shafts at intervals. Work by ByC jv commenced in January, 1998 and is scheduled for completion in 2000. April 1999.   Constructora Internacional reports progress with Plaza de Armas station walling at two pours/week for straight walls and 3 pours/week for curved walls using Efco forms. October 1999.  A 1.9 km westbound extension from Santa Ana to Matucana is under construction by Constructora Internacional, DPS, Inela and Mendes Junior. Automatic People Mover

The Airport Authority Hong Kong awarded the EUR 829,41 million (HKD7.2 bn) contract for APM (Automatic People Mover) and BHS (Baggage Handling System) tunnels and related works to Gammon Engineering & Construction Company Ltd .

The APM and BHS tunnels and related works (Contract 3802) forms a major part of the Three Runway Systems (3RS) project at the airport and will facilitate travellers to move between the new Third Runway Concourse and the expanded Terminal 2. The scope of work includes combined 1.8km-long eight-cell tunnel structures for the APM and BHS systems, 19 ancillary buildings, as well as building services and airport systems installations. Expressions of interest, deadline 18th September, 2008 for detailed design for tunnels and associated structures for the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong express rail link. The section from Guangzhou to Shenzhen will start operation in 2010. The Hong Kong section will use a dedicated corridor in tunnel. Plans call for the construction of a 26 km tunnel from the existing west Kowloon rail terminal to the Hong Kong-Shenzhen boundary at Huanggang. Construction is due to start in late 2009 for completion in 2014 or 2015. Expressions of interest are invited from suitably qualified combined multi-disciplinary consultants in the disciplines of civil and structural engineering, architectural, building services engineering and quantity surveying, together with specialist input as appropriate from other disciplines including environmental, acoustics, lighting, system assurance, traffic, fire engineering and landscaping. The detailed design for the tunnels and associated structures will be split into two major packages, with appointments being made in early 2009. Agreement C802 is for the design of the tunnels and associated structures (South) between West Kowloon Terminus (WKT) and Pat Heung Vent Building. This is an alignment length of approximately 15 km. Agreement C803 is for the design of the tunnels and associated structures (North) between Pat Heung Vent Building and the boundary crossing, representing an alignment length of approximately 10 km. It is expected that cut-and-cover, drill-and-blast and TBM tunnelling methods will be adopted to suit the geological conditions along the alignment. Since January, 2010 MTR Corporation Ltd has awarded three of the nine tunnel civil contracts for the 26 km Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL) project between Hong Kong and mainland China.Leighton Asia secured Contract 822, worth HK$3,235,352,722, for a 7.6 km twin-track tunnel construction, ventilation buildings and a 90 m-deep ventilation shaft in the Tse Uk Tsuen to Shek Yam section. Leighton Holdings has been awarded the EUR288 million contract to construct the 31 m-wide West Kowloon Terminus approach tunnel and 121 m-wide Track Fan tunnel section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong express rail link (XRL).
