Pilot drives for twin-tube 4.8 km Branisko and 2.185 km Ovoiarsko road tunnels under way, and site investigation in progress for 7.4 km Visonovo Martin tunnel, longest in country. May 1998.
On D1 highway from Bratislava to Jilina in north central region, first of two 4.8 km tubes has been completed and concrete lining is in progress using formworks. Four Atlas Copco Boomer 352s were employed in south tube, two in top headings and two on benches, for a full arched section of 96 sq m in granite with primary support of bolts and shotcrete. Original pilot drive retained for use as emergency escape route until north tube is driven, possibly in 2010. The 20-year plan for Slovakia shows a demand for 21 tunnels with a total length of 42.3 km. December 1999.

The 8 km long tunnel, which was built over 100 years ago, is currently on a two-track layout. To comply with modern safety standards and thereby extend the service life by a further 30 years, the tunnel is being streamlined to single track only. BIEGE European Trans Energy GmbH und TEGRAD d.o.o from Vienna secured the EUR5.78 million contract, excluding VAT, for the new overhead contact lines for the 7976 m Caravanche/Karavanke/Karawanken railway tunnel (Lot KRT2B).
Overhead line installation work will be in the section from Rosenbach station to Jesenice station, in the national territory of Austria and Slovenia. In the tunnel area (7.975 km), the erection/installation of a certified overhead line by means of overhead conductor rail is required. From the south portal up to and including Jesenice station, the installation of a new overhead contact line system is required in accordance with the specifications of Slovenian Railways. Kilometre State border km 53 635 on the Austrian side corresponds to km 637.264,96 on the Slovenian side.
Track 1 from ÖBB-km 49 262 (north portal) to SŽ-km 633 696 (south portal) will be equipped with a certified overhead contact line with overhead conductor rail according to EC design examination certificate No. 0893/2/CH1/15/ENE/DE EN/0095 of Notified Body Interoperability Railway Systems at the Federal Railway Authority - Railway CERT identification number of the European Commission 0893.
