TELT has awarded to the Joint Venture Itinera (leader), Ghella and Spie Batignolle the EUR 1.1 bn contract for CO3/4 lot for the excavation of the Italian Chiomonte-Susa section of the base tunnel under the new Lyon-Turin railway link project: This will be a 28.5 km tunnel.  

The involved sites will be at Chiomonte where the TBMs will be launched and at Salbertrand where the segments factory will be built.  

The 2 bimodal TBMs will be used for driving 18 km through 6 geological formations: first rock, then unknown ground below the water, which will require the use of a freezing technique and then there will be rock again. In the last 400 m in Susa, the serpentinites could contain a small percentage of asbestos. If this were the case, the rocks will be packed in big bags and stored in the Maddalena tunnel, without ever going outside.  

The first TBM will start in 2025 and will excavate 10.5 km, the second TBM will start in 2027 and will excavate 7.4 km.  

In Salbertrand an area of approximately 11,800 m2 will allow the storage of up to 1680 segments equivalent to 210 rings. The manufacturing plant will have a production capacity of 70 -105 segments per day.  The works will last approximately 91 months and will start after the formalization of the contract (1-1.5 months) and the issuance of the executive order (2 months).

The consortium consisting of the Piedmont-based companies Cogeis, CO.GE.FA., TRA.MA., Cavit, M.S. Plant Technology and the Swiss company Hupac Intermodal have been awarded the EUR 648.2 million contract for the management and reuse of rock extracted during the excavation of the Mont Cenis base tunnel in Italy. More than 50% of the 7 million tonnes of rock extracted on Italian territory will be reused in the work during excavation of the cross-border section. The rocks will be classified at the exit of the tunnel in Chiomonte to determine the type of reuse and will then reach the industrial area of Salbertrand by motorway. Here a part will be used for the production of concrete with which the lining segments of the main tunnels will be made; another part will be used for railway embankments, i.e. the bases of the tracks. The contract is for the final design of the section running from the central railway station to Maggiore Hospital and updating the final design carried out by the city of Bologna for the 3.5 km section from Fiera Michelino to the central railway station. For that section, a single tube tunnel solution has been preferred under Indipendenza Street and Bassi Street, with a curve radius of just 35 metres. The proposed technical solution envisages in particular to reuse the underpass at Maggiore Square as access ramp to the stop there so that disrupting excavation works will be partly avoided in a central part of the city. In addition to the benefit of the existing underpass, Maggiore Square station will not have platforms placed in front of each other but one in Indipendenza Street and another in Bassi Street, both before the sharp bend to allow trainsets to negotiate the bend slowly without reducing running times. 36/07.

Snam Rete Gas has awarded to Condotte d'Acqua the second section of the Pontremoli-Parma methane gas pipe which includes the 1,263 m-long Montecucchero tunnel, 4.25 m outer diameter and 3.6 m inner diameter, cross section 14.25 sq m, eight percent ascending gradient. Geology consisting of marls and sandstone in layers with variable thickness ranging from a few centimetres to several metres and compression strength of the sandstone that may reach 100 Mpa. The contractor will use a refurbished Lovat TBM previously used in Arezzo to bore four tunnels totalling 7 km. Concrete segmental rings comprising four hexagonal honeycomb 25 cm-thick segments, no key. As the tunnel progresses, the space between the segments and the tunnel face will be filled with cement grout. Basic design and work supervision by Snamprogetti. Project planning by Condotte d'Acqua. Preparatory work under way with tunnelling start planned for January 2003 for completion in May 2003.
