Robbins
TBMs at Chongqing metro
Two 6.4
m-diameter Robbins Main Beam TBMs were launched in winter
2009-2010 beneath Chongqing, a Chinese mega-city of over 35
million people. The two machines are excavating twin 12 km-long
tunnels for Line 6 of the Chongqing Metro, and are the first
hard rock TBMs to be used in the city.
Each machine is boring under sections of very low cover, ranging
from 10 to 60 m in sandstone from 12 to 50 MPa UCS. Both High
Performance (HP) TBMs started up from a common portal after
shop assembly in Chongqing. The first machine was moved through
the start chamber on a specially designed walking cradle,
and began cutting rock on 11.12.2009. The second machine was
launched a month later. As of late-February, 2010 the two
machines had excavated 800 m and 420 m respectively, starting
under about 20 m of cover. The tunnels are the first new lines
to be excavated for the city's metro system, which is planned
to include a network of nine rail routes, both above and below
ground, and approximately 30 km of tunnels excavated by both
TBM and drill/blast. Read
the full press release. 10/10.
The two
Robbins TBMs are boring under low cover of as little as
10 m, and must negotiate curves down to a 400 m radius

Mammoth Genoa underground motorway agreed
A memorandum
of understanding was signed in Genoa on 08.02.2010 for the construction
of a 23 km underground motorway, including the Gronda di Ponente
and the Rapallo-Santa Margherita Ligure tunnel. The public debate
last year considered five
alternative routes and revealed a new solution, which reduces
the environmental impact. The alignment passes through a geological
succession including asbestos. Drill/blast and hydraulic hammers
will be used in every tunnel east to Val Polcevera crossing,
those belonging to San Benigno junction, Voltri tunnel, and
tunnels on A26 connection; mechanized excavation with Hydroshield/EPB
TBM will be used for the remaining tunnels, west of Val Polcevera,
and in the asbestos zone. Click
here for the details. The No 2 alignment became the preliminary
design. See the SPEA Autostrade report.
Planned investment is EUR3.1 billion. 08/10.

Major
collapse at Gilgel-Gibe hydro
Gilgel-Gibe
hydroelectric power plant is located in the Great African Rift
Valley region of Ethiopia. It’s 26 km-long headrace tunnel
cuts through heterogeneous and complex geological formations.
It required the highest construction standards, and is an outstanding
engineering achievement. However, some three months after commissioning,
a collapse has occurred over 15 m of the tunnel at point pk
8.980 from the outlet portal. As a result, the plant, inaugurated
on 13.01.2010, has been closed for repairs. Ethiopian Electric
Power Corporation (EEPCO) has appointed Salini Costruttori,

Plastic Concrete in Atlantic Ocean tunnel
More
than ten major tunnelling projects in Norway are benefiting
from the use of Barchip structural synthetic fibre to reinforce
their shotcrete linings. Barchip,
