On 30.07.2016 the Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu laid the first foundation for the Imphal Railway Station at Yurembam Awang Leikai. This is located 13km southwest of Imphal city and is part of tunnel 12 which will become the longest railway tunnel in India at 11.55km. The tunnel is being built on the Jiribam to Imphal new broad gauge railway line in Manipur. Suresh Prabhu said a further proposal will be submitted to the Union Finance Ministry to ask for an extension of the rail head to go as far as Moreh which is Manipur's border township.
The 110.63 km Imphal to Jiribam railway line, includes 45 tunnels, and which was launched in 2004 is now a National Project. The works for the 12.5 km long Jiribam to Dholakhal section (Phase I) have now been completed. Altogether construction of 25 out of the total 37 tunnels on the 84 kms Jiribam to Tupul section have now been finished. The remaining 27 km stretch between Tupul and Imphal, including tunnel number 12 will be completed as part of Phase -II.
