Sirius Minerals Plc. has hired the European construction group Strabag to build a 13 km tunnel section for the underground transport system for the Woodsmith Mine near Whitby, England. The design-and-build contract was signed on 28 March. The Woodsmith Mine will begin extraction from the world’s largest deposit of polyhalite, a mineral used in the production of fertilizer, in 2021.

The section to be built by STRABAG is part of a 37 km tunnel with a diameter of 4.7 m for an environmentally friendly conveyor system to transport the mined polyhalite to Wilton for processing. The Strabag contract also includes the construction of a tunnel ramp as well as the tunnel portal at Wilton. The actual tunnelling works will cover the distance from the Wilton portal to a shaft at Lockwood Beck, with 150 m to be built via cut-and-cover construction, 800 m through conventional tunnelling and 11,900 m using a tunnel boring machine. The JV Porr-Hinteregger-Condotte-Itinera from Vienna secured the EUR966.06 million contract, excluding VAT, for the construction lot H51 Pfons Brenner on the Austrian side of the Brenner Base Tunnel project. The contract includes the conventional excavation of a safety tunnel towards the North up to the 22km point and towards the South to  the border at 32.1 km. Also part of the tender is the conventional excavation at Wolf of an emergency stop with associated works and communication point at St. Jodok. The mechanized excavation of the main tubes towards the  north to the 13.5 km point and towards the South at the Brenner-Austria/Italy Border at 32.1 km point. There will be 55 bypasses and linings. The Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH and Swietelsky Baugesellschaft m.b.H. were awarded the EUR250 million contract, composed of two lots, for rail track and systems of the new rail link from Wendlingen to Ulm.

Jointly the two companies are responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of a 60km section of the rail project Stuttgart-Ulm..

The contract includes the construction of nearly 118 km slab track, 60 km of which will be in tunnels, and 16 switches as well as the construction of 50-Hz low voltage systems, telecommunications and traction power supply.  2.500 km of cables will also need to be installed, along with the mechanical equipment with ventilation systems, technical rooms and signage and the installation of a 78 km  LED-handrail.

The project is split into two lots: the first lot includes the area in the Albvorland from Wendlingen to the Alb ascent between Weilheim and Hohenstadt, the second lot the Alb plateau from Widderstall to the Alb descent to Ulm. The start of the major contract, is estimated to take 30 months,  the design phase will be from February 2018, and building starts from 2019.

The Municipality of Warsaw received two tenders for the EUR310 million contract for the extension works of metro Line 2 in Warsaw. The first ranked is the JV Astaldi (50%)/Gulermak (50%) and the second ranked is Sinohydro Corporation Ltd  from Beijing.

The bid calls for designing and building the 4 km western underground Section 3 of metro Line 2 in Warsaw from the C04 station to the Mory (STP) technical station (workshop/depot). The section will include three stations, the technical station and a parking, Duration of the works will be  4-years. Laing O’Rourke secured the EUR599,31 million (AUD955 million) contract to build the new Sydney Metro underground platforms at Central Station and Central Walk, a key component of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project.

Laing O’Rourke will deliver the project alongside global architecture firm Woods Bagot and its partner John McAslan + Partners, and with one of the world's leading design partnerships comprising GHD and Aurecon.

The Central contract includes the excavation and construction of the new underground Sydney Metro platforms at Central beneath platforms 13 and 14; Central Walk – a new 19 m wide underground concourse from Chalmers Street, connecting customers to suburban rail platforms, Sydney Metro platforms, the new light rail and buses.

Completion of the Central Walk and Central Station metro upgrade contract is expected in 2022, with Central Walk open to customers.

Once the Central contract is complete, work will continue along the 30km length of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project to lay tracks and fit out stations before services start in 2024. The three groups Lorth JV (a joint venture between Laing O'Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd and John Holland Pty Ltd), Metconnect (a joint venture between Downer EDI Engineering Power Pty Ltd and RCR O’Donnell Griffin Pty Ltd) and Systems Connect (a joint venture between UGL Engineering Pty Ltd and CPB Contractors Pty Ltd) have been shortlisted for the Metro line-wide works which includes laying tracks in the 15.5 km tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham, installing electrical systems including substations, constructing Sydney Metro Trains Facility South and converting the existing Bankstown Line to allow metro trains to run.

The NSW Government expects to award the contracts later this year.
